A life long love of running, a passion for aviation and a desire to get fit have combined to lead a local running group onto great things.
Two years ago, aviation charity worker, Kim Davenport, a keen runner and member of Cheltenham-based Almost Athletes, trained as Leader in Running Fitness. Looking to inspire others to take up the sport, she set up a Run Together running group.
Whilst looking for a venue to host the sessions, it occurred to Kim that the fly2help offices at Gloucestershire Airport, Staverton would be the perfect location and Run2Help was born.
The runners make a donation to fly2help at each session and have raised an amazing £3030 as the group celebrates it’s second birthday on Thursday 14th March. The group has around 25 regular runners, with ages ranging from 16 to 68 and of all abilities. Some of the absolute beginners have progressed from their first tentative steps to complete 5km park runs, 10km races and some are currently training for their first half marathon.
Kim Davenport said “Two years ago I could never have imagined the group would be where it is now and would have raised so much money for fly2help. I have been so lucky to have such lovely people join the group. Everyone has become such great friends and we have all supported each other through a tough year for some.
The group is about so much more than running though, our members have volunteered at fly2help’s Air Smiles and fundraising days, and even nominated beneficiaries for the charity to help. They’ve become a real part of the Airport community.”
Tomorrow, we celebrate with cake and prosecco but only after the group have completed their regular 5km. The group meets at Gloucestershire Airport on Mondays and Thursdays at 6pm.
