Cotswold Community School Pupils - Air Smiles Day 17th July 2009

The Cotswold Community School is a boarding school for a small number of boys aged between 10 and 16 years. This school is part of the Action for Children Charity (originally National Childrens' Homes). All these boys have experienced extensive trauma in their young years.

Five boys aged between 12 and 13 years old + 3 members of staff, can to Kemble Airport for their own exciting adventure. Unfortunately these boys were unable to fly with us; however they were still thrilled to enjoy an aviation themed day with fly2help.

Their day started with a visit to the Control Tower where they were able to experience and learn all about Air Traffic Control and Radiotelephony; they also visited the Fire Station to learn more about the crew's work and appliances.

After lunch laid on by fly2help at AV8 restaurant, they boys enjoyed an up-close guided tour of the Britannia aircraft.

They were also able to witness the Brawn Formula 1 racing team practicing on the runway through out the day; followed by a tour of the Delta Jets hangar where they were able to get up close to all the aircraft, including the Jet Provost, which was about to go off on a check flight.

The head teacher wrote "Thank you so much for providing our boys with an outstanding opportunity to experience the work of the Airfield. I know that the boys enjoyed it tremendously."

We received thank you letters from all the boys -

"I learned a lot about the safety around the airfield and the visit to Delta Jets and feeling the blast from the engine. It was a thrilling experience, one of a kind, and probably one of the best trips I've been on. It was a brilliant day and I would like to do it again."

"Thank you for a wonderful day on Friday. It was so good I don't know where to start. First of all there was the plane (Britannia), it was the first time I had been in a plane, and it was great, and then we went in the cockpit. Then the food and drinks were good and the free gifts. Thank you so much, I enjoyed the day, thank you."

"Thank you for a lovely day, the meal, your time and the sites of the airfield. I especially enjoyed Delta Jets because of the blast of the jet engine. I really enjoyed the meal: I had fish and chips, they were lovely and crispy and the hot chocolate was great. Thank you for the free gifts, it was very kind of you, I would like to visit again."

"Thank you for Friday's experience, it was outstanding. The tour was very well organised the staff friendly, the planes fantastic and the food was lovely. All in all it was a brilliant day out (and we got out of school). We had the added bonus of watching the Brawn racing car, we went up the Britannia plane, we had a fabulous meal in AV8 restaurant and we spoke to the friendly pilot of the jet plane. Thank you very much."

"Thank you for a lovely day, I especially enjoyed watching the Brawn racing car. The food was lovely and the restaurant very posh and enjoyable. I quite liked Delta Jets because it helped me learn more about planes and getting close to them and talking to the lady about it. I liked watching the plane take off close up. The old Britannia was interesting and talking to Merv helped. I liked it in the pilot's seat especially with head phones on. Thank you once again and I hope to visit sometime."
