Tailwheel Conversion
The techniques for taxiing, taking off, landing tailwheel
aircraft are very different from those of the nose wheel (tricycle)
aircraft in which the majority of private pilots gain their
PPL. There can be little doubt that it takes a lot more in
terms of handling skills to become a competent tailwheel pilot.
So why convert to tailwheel aircraft?
The simple answer is the rewards far outweigh the effort
that is required to master the techniques of tailwheel flying.
Having mastered these techniques a whole new world of light
aviation will open up to you. You'll be in a position to be
checked out on a huge range of exhilarating and specialist
airplanes including vintage types. If you are thinking of
trying aerobatics you'll already have one of the essential
skill sets required before you start your training as most
high performance aerobatic aircraft are tailwheel.
Flying P1 in a tailwheel aeroplane is surely one of the most
pleasurable activities in light aviation and having worked
hard for your PPL you deserve to enjoy the rewards that flying
in 'tail draggers' undoubtedly offer. Tail draggers are thought
of by many as the 'real' airplanes on an airfield! You could
certainly be forgiven for climbing out of one with your chest
proudly puffed. Either way it is incredibly rewarding and
flying 'real' airplanes is a great buzz!
