Group Captain Willie Cruickshank

Willie CruickshankBorn in 1966, Willie Cruickshank joined the RAF as a direct entrant navigator in January 1985. Following a short tour on the Buccaneer in the Maritime Strike role, (with fly2help founder Phil O'Dell) he accepted a branch change and on completion of pilot training started his first of 4 tours on the Jaguar (in the offensive support and reconnaissance roles) which included missions on OP DENY FLIGHT over Bosnia and on OP RESINATE over Iraq.

In 2000, he moved to High Wycombe as the Personal Staff Officer to Air Officer Commanding 1 Group after which he attended the Defence Academy for a year, graduating with an MA in Defence Studies from Kings College in July 2003. Willie then went to the Combined Air Operations Centre at Al Udeid, Qatar as the Chief of Combat Operations with responsibility for executing the day to day management of military air operations in support for OP IRAQI FREEDOM and OP ENDURING FREEDOM (Afghanistan) as well as other US specific operations.

Willie returned to the Jaguar as Officer Commanding 6 Squadron in May 2004 (along with fly2help CEO Chris Hadlow) and has accumulated around 4000 hours of fast-jet flying. In 2006, he moved to the Department of Targeting and Information Operations as the Chief of UK Special Technical Operations and the National lead for the development of Space Control activities.

Willie was appointed Personal Staff Officer to Chief of the Air Staff in April 2007 and, in January 2009, was promoted to Group Captain. He then became Assistant Head of Strategy Management in the Ministry of Defence with specific responsibility for developing the size and shape of the future Navy, Army and Air Force as part of the Defence Review.
