Helen Tempest - Air Smiles Event Manager
Helen was introduced to flying at the tender age of 18 months, sitting on her father's knee as he dropped the Red Devils parachute team from a DeHavilland Rapide aircraft and has been an eager aviating passenger ever since.
She comes from an airshow family and spent years persuading her father to let her ride on the top wing of the Barnstormers Tiger Moth - he finally gave in when she was 15, making Helen at that time the world's youngest wingwalker.
At 21 she joined Vic Norman's AeroSuperBatics wingwalking team and spent the next 19 years wingwalking for Yugo Cars, Super Car Classics, Cadbury's Crunchie and Utterly Butterly, notching up further world records, including the longest wingwalk (2 hours 40 minutes - later broken by Roy Castle), the shortest baton pass (3 feet) and the first hand hold whilst in mirror formation. She also helped develop the cockpit climb and swivelling rig whilst running the team's complex operations programme. The wingwalkers performed throughout the UK and Europe and there were overseas displays in China and the UAE.
In 2006 after the birth of her daughter, Helen started working at Cotswold Airport for Ultimate High, the UK's leading provider of advanced flight training and hands on flight experiences. The company has close ties with fly2help, operating their beloved Chipmunk and working together on the annual Aviation Scholarship.
Helen still has close ties with the air display circuit and during 2011 managed O'Brien's Flying Circus, a display act that involves a Crazy Flying Piper Cub aircraft that lands on the back of a moving trailer and also made a return to wingwalking with Wingwalk Displays Ltd.
Helen is delighted to be joining fly2help as an Air Smiles Event Manager and will be working alongside Dawn Hadlow taking the Air Smiles events to additional airfields around the UK. She says "I have been extremely lucky to work within an industry that I feel passionate about, flying has always lifted my spirits and the views from an aircraft can be both awe-inspiring and a huge amount of fun. The opportunity to help others experience these magical moments will be absolutely brilliant".
